The Bunker

Year 6 is a challenging and busy year as we begin to prepare for the SATs exams. It is vital that your child stays focused and takes responsibility for their own learning. Throughout the year, they will be provided with a range of exciting learning opportunities, linking to the 3 topic themes: Poppies, Peace and Power, Natural Disasters and Explorers. After a fantastic year (last year) of exploring ‘Middle Earth’, the Year 6 classroom has now been transported back in time to one of the most significant periods of history – the World Wars. We will be reading the book, ‘The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, weekly and regularly intertwining it into our lessons.

General Reminders
Daily reading is expected every evening after school. Every child will have the opportunity to read to a member of staff weekly, where they will have the opportunity to ask and answer questions in order to improve their comprehension skills. Reading regularly supports all aspects of learning by broadening their vocabulary and imagination.
Homework is none negotiable in Year 6. It is an essential part of learning; enabling good progress to be made. Children will be given a piece of Maths and Literacy each week, alongside weekly spellings and compulsory reading (selected chapters from ‘The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas’). As we progress throughout the year their homework will be increased. Rewards will be given to those who complete the extra homework - these are NOT to be missed out on!
P.E kits MUST be in school all week. Children are expected to bring their kits on a Monday and take them home on a Friday.
Your child’s diary will help to make sure that they are well organised. It must be brought into school every day to record homework and significant events taking place in school. It is your child’s responsibility to ask you to sign their diary every weekend. These will be checked on Monday morning.
